White trash nancy5/20/2023 ![]() I became very aware of the importance of how Jefferson talked about the poor. But it also had to do with when I was working on “Madison and Jefferson,” which I coauthored with Andrew Burstein. Part of it has to do with my graduate training my first book dealt with race, class and gender. When you’re a historian, you gravitate toward certain issues. When did you first start working on the idea of the “poor white” or “poor white trash?” It’s a bracing, sometimes upsetting read, beginning with its name, a term which still causes deep offense in some quarters. ![]() The book has been on Isenberg’s curriculum for 15 years, as part of a history class called “Crime, Conspiracy, and Courtroom Dramas,” which she teaches at Louisiana State University.įrom “Mockingbird,” Isenberg’s book travels back to the first English arrivals on the American shore, tracing four centuries of how we talk and think about class (and race) in our most unequal union. ![]() Nancy Isenberg’s book “White Trash” begins by looking at the characters in "To Kill a Mockingbird." Both the book and the movie play with the divide between Atticus Finch, who is saintly and proper, and the poor white family, the Ewells, whose daughter’s false rape accusation is at the story’s center, as an example that there are two kinds of white people in the South. ![]() ![]() ![]() Finding peace requires showing up-Nedra has written the blueprint on how to not only show up but also do the work." The book is really about Cleo’s immersion in a futuristic boarding school filled with alien creatures and technology she could have never imagined. Upon reflection, however, I realized that is not really what the book is about. Initially, I thought I would talk about Cleo’s role as supposed savior and the test she must undergo to prove herself. Though some readers may be disappointed there is no clear plot, others may find Cleo and her fantastic world entertaining enough to cover any lack of structure.ĭeciding how to summarize Target Practice proved a bit of a knotty problem. ![]() ![]() This first installment functions mainly as a set-up to the rest of the series. Although she pretty much hates all her subjects except PE, she just might start to like her new home. With that being impossible, however, she has to acclimate herself to her new school. Hailed as the savior of the galaxy, Cleo is unimpressed she just wants to return home. Target Practice, the first volume in the Cleopatra in Space graphic novel series, follows fifteen-year-old Cleo as she is transported into the future from ancient Egypt. ![]() ![]() ![]() (In another part of the same city where the Harlequin carried on his "activities," totally unrelated in every way to what concerns us here, save that it illustrates the Ticktockman's power and import, a man named Marshall Delahanty received his turn-off notice from the Ticktockman's office. The physicians, gathered in solemn conclave, roared with laughter, and accepted the Harlequin's apologies with exaggerated bowing and posturing, and a merry time was had by all, who thought the Harlequin was a regular foofaraw in fancy pants all, that is, but the authorities, who had been sent out by the office of the Ticktockman they hung there like so much dockside cargo, hauled up above the floor of the amphitheater in a most unseemly fashion. The Harlequin laughed and laughed, and apologized profusely. Blowing a large bullhorn, he frightened and unnerved them so, their own moisturized encirclement webs sucked closed, and they were hauled up, kicking and shrieking, high above the amphitheater's floor. He arrived twenty minutes early, while they were setting up the spiderwebs to trap and hold him. They assumed, naturally, that he would be late. ![]() ![]() The words had burned in the sky, and of course the authorities were there, lying in wait for him. Said the Ticktockman ![]() William gibson agency5/20/2023 ![]() ![]() In this universe, spies, junkies and grifters engaged with the surge of post-9/11 surveillance technology as if it were all a McGuffin, evoking the visceral strangeness of our own swift transformation into a networked surveillance state, whose architects read cyberpunk not as a warning but as a business plan.Īnd then, Gibson complicated the plot even further with 2014’s “ The Peripheral,” a time-travel novel of braided parallel worlds, in which people from the future experience variations of their past - as in “Pattern Recognition”- while inhabiting a far-future dystopia that could easily have been a bit of light entertainment in “Neuromancer.” This fusion of futuristic Gibson and future-shocked Gibson was stunningly effective. After writing two trilogies of genre-defining cyberpunk in the 1980s and ‘90s, he swerved abruptly into bold new territory with 2003’s “Pattern Recognition,” a science fiction novel (along with two sequels) set not in the distant future but in an alternate recent past. ![]() If Gibson had stopped there, his place in history would be assured, but he didn’t. But if you’ve read only one book from that stubbornly resilient genre, “Neuromancer” is probably it. Dick awards - “ Neuromancer” wasn’t the book where Gibson coined the now-ubiquitous neologism “ cyberspace.” Nor was it the first cyberpunk novel. Published in 1984 and awarded science fiction’s “triple crown” - the Hugo, Nebula and Philip K. William Gibson made his reputation with his very first novel. ![]() ![]() ![]() Polish astronomer and mathematician who, as a student, studied canon law, mathematics, and medicine at Cracow, Bologna, Rome, Padua, and Ferrara. ![]() The idea that the Sun Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy was the center of the solar system was not new (similar theories had been proposed by Aristarchus and Nicholas of Cusa), but Copernicus also worke Polish name: Mikołaj Kopernik. ![]() In this model, the sun Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy was actually not exactly the center of the solar system, but was slightly offset from the center using a device invented by Ptolemy known as the equant point. Were they evil incarnate, or merely a divine check on the population, keeping humanity from expanding past the capacity of the Ship to support?
