Jane franklin book5/23/2023 ![]() ![]() There was not much roughing it on the trip through the bush, since whenever possible they stayed with settlers or officials. As in many of her later journeys, she was accompanied by her niece, Sophia Cracroft for this trip she also had three gentlemen companions, two policemen, and a bevy of servants. Lady Franklin made the surprising (to her contemporaries) decision to sail to the new settlement at Port Philip, and from there make her way overland to Sydney. During Franklin's tenure as governor of Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), she made a number of trips to Australia and New Zealand her 1839 voyage to Sydney is the subject of this volume. Lady Franklin was a great traveler in her own right. Lady Franklin was the strongest advocate for sending out search parties, and financed several such expeditions herself. ![]() ![]() After three years went by with no word from Franklin, dozens of ships were sent to search for him. Lady Jane Franklin is known primarily for being the wife of Sir John Franklin, the polar explorer whose third and final expedition to find the Northwest Passage ended with the loss of both his ships and all of his men. ![]()
